Automotive News reports another large thing to originate from this week's
Tokyo Motor Show. Volkswagen gave the globe a sneak peek of its
second-generation Tiguan crossover, a four-wheel-drive hybrid concept
called the Volkswagen Cross Coupe. Find out more about this at:

Using Cross Coupe to get to future of VW SUVs
The Volkswagen Cross Coupe must be a compact SUV/four-door car put
to-gether according to VW’s Modularer Querbaukasten (Modular Transverse
Ma-trix or MQB) vehicle platform. Sources near VW design manager Walter
de’Silva explained that the design will be in all SUVs that come from Volkswagen.
The next Tiguan model that will be released will be coming out in 2013,
Automotive News explains.
A different sort of style
Expert consensus is that the Cross Coupe will consist of choice of two
differ-ent wheelbase lengths, the longer at 171 inches long and 73.5 inches
wide, providing room for a third row of seats.
"We won't rule out the possibility of adding a sportier SUV to
the Volkswagen lineup at some time. But the main message with the Cross
Coupe is its styling, which stands for the future of SUV design at
Volkswagen," a Volkswagen representative told Au-toweek.
The front of the VW Cross Coupe will have a specific type of style. It was
seen in the Geneva motor show a few months ago on the Tex and Go concept
automobiles. The Cross Coupe will end up doing a better fig-ure than what
the Tiguan did with a heavy, sculpted service.
Expect to see an angled tailgate, pronounced wheel arches and 20-inch alloy
wheels. You'll also see a high waistline and shallow side glass. With the
inside, it will look like an Audi vehicle. It will look very high-tech.
Don’t forget about a motor
You are able to have front wheel drive or all-wheel drive with the gearbox
found in the Volkswagen Cross Coupe gas-electric hybrid system. VW's
tur-bocharged, 1.4-liter, four-cylinder, and direct-injection motor comes
standard, producing up to 261 horsepower via two electric motors.
Kinetic energy is needed, or a power outlet, to charge the lithium-ion
battery with a 9.8 kilowatt=hour at 370 volts. As re-ported by Volkswagen,
the car can go all-electric for 25 miles at typical city speeds while in
front-wheel drive.
A trade-off
Rather than using a mechanical drive shaft, Volkswagen has gone someplace
else. The rear wheels will be powered by an electric motor. This saves some
weight, making 0-to-62 mph in 7.0 seconds possible. You can get all the way
up to 71 mph on electricity alone and up to 124 mph between the two.
