Cup: Crunching the Numbers: Pepsi 500

    Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 7:38 PM [General]

18 Cup races have been held at Auto Club Speedway (i.e. California). One race was held each year from 1997 to 2003 then two from 2004 to present.

The inauguaral race was held on June 22nd 2009 and won by 1997 Cup champion Jeff Gordon for his 26th career victory. He started 3rd and led 113 laps but depended on fuel mileage to take the checkered flag ahead of HMS teammate and defending Cup champion Terry Labonte. Joe Nemechek won his first career pole driving for Felix Sabates but finished 18th 2 laps down while Jeff Green got his first career top ten driving for Gary Bechtel.

Matt Kenseth (Feb 2006, Feb 2007 and Feb 2009), Jimmie Johnson (2002, Sept 2007 and Sept 2008) and Jeff Gordon (1997, 1999 and May 2004) are the all time winners at California with three each and are the only multiple time winners. The rest of the winners are:

    • Mark Martin (1998)
    • Jeremy Mayfield (2000)
    • Rusty Wallace (2001)
    • Kurt Busch (2003)
    • Elliott Sadler (Sept 2004)
    • Greg Biffle (Feb 2005)
    • Kyle Busch (Sept 2005)
    • Kasey Kahne (Sept 2006)
    • Carl Edwards (Feb 2008)

No driver has won back-to-back races at California.

Jimmie Johnson (13 starts) is the all time leader in top 2 finishes (7), laps led (597), average start (9.2) and average finish (6.2).

Jeff Gordon (18 starts) is the all time leader in top fives (9).

Matt Kenseth (15 starts) is the all time leader in top tens (11).

Kurt Busch (14 starts) is the all time leader in poles (3).

Jeff Burton (18 starts) is the all time leader in laps completed (4486).

Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson are the only two drivers to get their first career Cup win at California; Jimmie got the hometown win in 2002 in just his 13th career start while Kyle Busch, at the time, became the youngest winner in Cup Series history. Kyle Busch also became the youngest pole winner in Cup history here in Feb 2005 and is still the youngest to this date.

Johnson is the only driver to win from the pole (Sept 2008); 9 of the 18 races have been won from starting in the top 10 while the farthest back anyone's started and won was 31st in 2006 by Matt Kenseth who's average start at California is 22.7.

Hendrick Motorsports (Gordon 3, Johnson 3, Kyle Busch 1) and Roush Fenway Racing (Kenseth 3, Martin 1, Kurt Busch 1, Biffle 1, Edwards 1) have the most wins with 7 apiece. Penske Racing (Mayfield, Wallace), Yates Racing (Sadler) and Evernham Motorsports (Kahne) are the other winners.

Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress Racing are winless at California. Bobby Labonte has finished runner up twice for JGR while RCR only has 5 top fives in 51 starts with a best finish of 3rd by Clint Bowyer in 2006. Tony Stewart has led the most laps of any driver without a win at 228 (225 with JGR), his best finish being 4th in 1999 and 2001.

Ford has the most wins with 10 (RFR 7, Penske 2, Yates 1) while Chevrolet's 7 wins have all come with HMS. Dodge with Evernham has the one other win.

Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch have finished in the top 10 in the last 8 races at California. Kenseth has 3 wins, 5 top fives and 3 7th place finishes while Kyle has 1 win, 4 top fives and a worst finish of 10th in that stretch. They're both the longest top 10 streaks ever at California.

Kyle Petty has run 17 races at California without a top ten; his average finish is 30.8, his best finish was 17th in 2002 and his only lead lap finish was an 18th in 2005.

Crunching the Numbers: Sprint Cup Series, Price Chopper 400

    Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 5:31 PM [General]

There've been 8 Cup races held at Kansas Speedway since 2001 with 7 different winners. Jeff Gordon won the first two races held there and since then there's been 6 different winners: Ryan Newman, Joe Nemechek, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson.

Since the inception of the Chase, only 2 of the 5 Kansas races have been won by Chase drivers: Mark Martin in 2005 and Jimmie Johnson in 2008. Nemechek (2004), Stewart (2006) and Biffle (2007) are the non-Chaser winners. Kansas had been Mark Martin's last win previous to this season.

Jeff Gordon leads all drivers at Kansas in wins (2), top fives (5) and top tens (6). Jimmie Johnson has led the most laps (251) and has the most poles (3), and has the best average start (4.9). Mark Martin has completed the most laps at Kansas (2061) and hometown driver Clint Bowyer has the best average finish (7.7 in 3 starts).

Hendrick Motorsports has the most victories at Kansas with 3 (Gordon 2, Johnson 1). Roush Fenway Racing has 2 wins (Mark Martin and Greg Biffle) while Penske Racing (Ryan Newman), MB2 Motorsports (Joe Nemechek) and Joe Gibbs Racing (Tony Stewart).

The most laps led in a Kansas race was by 2005 winner Mark Martin, leading 139 of the 267 laps. The leader of the most laps has won 3 of the 8 races (Jeff Gordon in 2002, Mark in 2005, Johnson in 2008).

Ryan Newman finished in the top 2 in his first 3 races at Kansas: 2nd in 2001 and 2002 and a win in 2003. Since then Newman has finished 33rd, 23rd, 24th, 43rd and 16th.

RCR has yet to win at Kansas but hometown driver Clint Bowyer finished runner-up in a controversial finish in 2007 when Greg Biffle appeared to run out of fuel under caution while leading and wasn't the first to take the checkered flag. NASCAR let Biffle keep the win.

Jeff Gordon is the only driver to win at Kansas and go on to win the championship (2001).

Nemechek in 2004 and Johnson in 2008 are the only drivers to win at Kansas from the pole. The race has been won from starting in the top 10 four times with the worst start by a winner being 21st in 2006 by Tony Stewart.

In his last race with Red Bull Racing and first career start at Kansas, AJ Allmendinger finished 9th. His current team, Richard Petty Motorsports, has 4 top fives and 8 top tens in 17 starts dating back to it's start as Evernham Motorsports. Elliott Sadler has 2 straight top tens at Kansas while Kasey Kahne has a pole but only 1 top ten in 5 career starts.

Michael Waltrip has the worst average finish at Kansas of anyone who's started all 8 races at Kansas at 31.8. His best finish is 11th in 2004 but has 6 finishes of 30th or worse. He and Bobby Labonte are the only drivers with 8 starts to not have a top 10 finish. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch don't have any top fives in 8 starts.

    Chase Driver's history at Kansas:

Mark Martin - 8 starts, 1 win, 2 top fives, 3 top tens, 141 laps led, 20.9 average start, 13.1 average finish.

It took me forever to figure out how to post this

    Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 4:56 PM [General]

It turned out My Hub is where you do stuff with your profile and not My Site.

Having blogs is nice since I can post my stat stuff here, but that depends on how many people take advantage of this or give a crap about it. So stay tuned!
